CPR/AED CERTIFICATION COURSES

The ISU Wellness Center offers a variety of CPR/AED and first aid courses to help you achieve employment requirements, fulfill degree requirements and/or prerequisites, or for your own personal knowledge. The courses we offer include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training and basic first aid.

The Wellness Center utilizes the American Heart Association (AHA) curricula for our CPR/AED and first aid courses. Our AHA-certified instructors teach Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and Heartsaver® CPR/AED and Heartsaver® First Aid courses.

American Heart Association CPR/AED and First Aid Course Descriptions*

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. This course is for healthcare students and professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. This course may be used for initial or renewal BLS for Healthcare Providers Course completion.

BLS for Healthcare Providers Course Content

  • Key changes in basic life support, reflecting the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Critical concepts of high-quality CPR
  • The American Heart Association Chain of Survival
  • 1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
  • Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques
  • Bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant
  • Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant
  • Relief of choking for adult, child and infant
  • CPR with an advanced airway (This is an introduction to the compression/ventilation rate and ratio for a patient who has an advanced airway in place.)

Heartsaver® CPR/AED

Heartsaver® CPR/AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult. This course teaches skills with AHA's research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students' learning of skills. This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Heartsaver® CPR/AED Course Content

  • Key changes reflecting the new science from the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Adult CPR and AED use
  • Optional modules in child CPR and AED use and infant CPR, including child and infant choking
  • Optional written test

Heartsaver® First Aid

Heartsaver® First Aid is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Heartsaver® First Aid and CPR/AED

Heartsaver® First Aid and CPR/AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills, such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock, and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use. This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in first aid, CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements.

Course fees are subject to change without notice. The ISU Wellness Center accepts cash or check/money order payable to ISU for course fee payment. Course fees are due prior to the start of the course in which you are registered to complete. It is recommended that you pay the course fee several days in advance to enable you to obtain the student manual for review prior to the class.

NOTE: A minimum of six (6) participants is required for a course to be taught.

The ISU Wellness Center is open to making special arrangements for large groups who have similar instruction needs (i.e., a group of health profession students who all require the Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider renewal certification).
