Senior Field Practicum
The Senior Field Practicum is an experiential learning opportunity which challenges students to link social work knowledge, values and skills with applied practice. The Field Practicum structure consists of two components.
- Agency placement and
- Weekly on-campus seminar
In placement, under field instructor supervision, students experience entry level social work through application of problem solving and planned change models. The seminar provides opportunities for discussion, critical reflection, skills training, and community agency networking. Students, field instructors and faculty strive to integrate practice and theory from academic course work throughout the practicum experience.
Student Information
The student has a choice of a concurrent (fall/spring semesters) or block (one semester) practicum placement. Under either choice, the student must complete 400 clock hours within an approved community agency. Students are expected to gain experience with diverse client populations as well as engage in micro, mezzo, and macro level learning activities.
Once students are accepted into the ISU Social Work Program, they will be provided with login information for the program’s Intern Placement Tracking (IPT) system provided by Alcea Software. This web-based system is used as a method of tracking all students in the Social Work Program and particularly those students who are placed in Senior Field Practicum Sites. The IPT system gives students a valuable tool to research prospective field agency sites. The IPT system also allows ISU, agency field instructors, and students to communicate throughout the practicum process.
Agency & Field Instructor Information
Agencies interested in becoming an approved Field Practicum Agency Site for the ISU Social Work Program may complete a Practicum Agency Profile and submit this application to the Field Coordinator Agency Profile Form. Potential Field Instructors within the agency may complete the Field Instructor Background Form Field Instructor Background Form and submit it as well. Please see Senior Field Practicum Manual for agency and field instructor requirements and additional information.
Upon notification of approval, the agency and its field instructors will receive login information for the Intern Placement Tracking (IPT system). This web-based system allows agencies to post current information regarding practicum placements and enables students to view prospective field agency placement sites.
