Student Activities Board

History of the Student Activities Board

Idaho State University has a large legacy of student activities and programs. Since its establishment in 1901 as an academy, ISU has placed an emphasis on student life through campus events.

Prior to the 1970's, the student programming body was known as the Social Committee. This student organization was mirrored by a faculty committee known as the Speakers and Artists Committee.

The following excerpt appeared in the 1969 edition of Wickiup, the ISU yearbook:

"Students at ISU are provided with many opportunities for expanding awareness in the fields of music, politics, dance and art. Social Committee, operated entirely by students with a budget of $142,000, offers programs including professional entertainment, stomp and formal dances, a stereo listening room, an art gallery featuring new displays monthly, top-rated movies, and interesting and controversial speakers and programs."

During the early 1970's the Social Committee evolved into the Program Board and was recognized by the Associated Students of Idaho State University. This newly organized Program Board was structured to handle the needs of an ever-growing campus.

In 2007 the Program Board underwent minor structural changes to reflect an evolving institution. These changes resulted from new legislation within the ASISU constitution which brought more autonomy to the board. The board was also renamed to the Student Activities Board. This name change was to reflect the "for students, by students" ideology.

The historical importance of a student-operated programming body is still evident today at ISU. The Student Activities Board continues to build upon a great legacy that spans the century of ISU history.
