Objectives
- Review risk management and decision-making tools for wastewater reuse; environmental security and sustainability.
- Develop risk management toolbox for the implementation of risk-based environmental solutions for wastewater reuse.
- Integrate know-how; expertise and advanced technologies in the area of wastewater reuse risk management separately developed in different NATO and Mediterranean countries.
Expected Short-term benefits:
- The meeting will bring together experts on wastewater reuse for irrigation, water resource management, environmental economists, environmental sociologists, environmental risk assessment and environmental decision-making tools, as well as political scientists working resolving on international water conflicts, from NATO countries and from Mediterranean countries, to develop tools and recommendations for wastewater reuse considering environmental security as well as ensuring a stable water supply at an affordable cost.
- The results and selected papers will be published in a book titled “Wastewater Reuse - Risk Assessment, Decision-Making and Environmental Security” in the NATO Science Through Security Series:C – Environmental Security.
- The Mediterranean Dialogue countries will benefit from the meeting through international interaction and cooperation along with the development of a reference work containing a comprehensive multidisciplinary analysis of the approaches to wastewater reuse.
Expected Long-term benefits:
- This workshop will show managers, environmental scientists, and government officials how to use risk management and decision-making tools to make optimal water resource management decisions regarding wastewater reuse under considerations of maintaining environmental security through water quality assurance as well as considerations of international security through assuring a stable water supply to water-scarce countries
- The ARW will contribute to the international knowledge of risk assessment and decision-making tools regarding wastewater reuse.
- Scientists from NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue countries will assess the current tools from multidisciplinary aspects to identify and develop the most appropriate methods for planning wastewater reuse.
