Basic Non-Music Requirements for B.M. Degree

The Basic Non-Music Requirements for the B.M. degree do not follow the General Education Requirements (Goals) set forth for most ISU degrees. However, all of the courses included in ISU's Goals may be used to satisfy the Basic Non-Music Requirements for the B.M. degree. Here are the relationships between the Basic Non-Music Requirements and ISU's Goals.

Goal 1. English Composition (3 cr). This requirement is satisfied by completing ENGL 1102. Most students must take ENGL 1101 as a prerequisite.

Goal 2. Speech (3 cr). This requirement is satisfied by completing COMM 1101.

Goal 10B. Foreign Language (8 cr). Only French or German courses may be used for the B.M. degree. Voice majors are strongly encouraged to elect one year of foreign language study in each language.

Social Sciences (12 cr). Courses that may be used to satisfy this requirement include, but are not limited to, all courses listed for Goals 9, 10A, 11 & 12. Possible subject areas include Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.

Natural and Physical Sciences (8 cr). This requirement corresponds to Goals 4 & 5. At least one lab course must be included.

Fine Arts and Humanities (3 cr). Includes all of the courses listed for Goals 6, 7 & 8. Music and Foreign Language courses may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

Electives (6 cr). May be fulfilled by any courses except Music courses. (See "Foreign Language" above - Voice majors are strongly encouraged to elect one year of study in both French and German).
