  • Graduate Program
ISU’s graduate program in mathematics is supported by a strong and energetic faculty with a commitment to teaching, research, and professional service. Faculty research interests represent a wide range of mathematics and statistics; they include such areas as differential geometry, algebra and representation theory, mathematical biology, hydrology, carcinogenesis and other medical applications, applied statistics, numerical analysis, matrix theory, and real, complex, and functional analysis. The department offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Arts (D.A.) degrees in Mathematics.
    • M.S. students develop a broad and deep knowledge of mathematics. The program prepares them for careers in government or industry, for teaching at junior or community colleges, or for further study at the doctoral level. Thesis and non-thesis options are available
    • The D.A. is a terminal degree for those planning college teaching careers. It emphasizes broad competence in mathematics, skill in exposition, teaching effectiveness, and theoretical and practical preparation in pedagogy. Students complete a D.A. thesis, which may be of a research, expository, or pedagogical nature.

The department also participates in the Subsurface Science emphasis area of the Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science.

Financial support is available through graduate assistantships and D.A. fellowships. In 2006-2007, stipends for the former were $8,694.40 (M.S. level) and $11,354.40 (D.A. level), and those for the latter were $12,164.30. Future stipends might be slightly higher. Such awards include a waiver of non-resident tuition and are routinely accompanied by scholarships waiving in-state fees and health insurance fees. For 2006-2007, the annual value of such waivers was $14,130.00 for non-residents and $5,860.00 for residents.
