Idaho Bioterrorism Awareness & Preparedness Program Launches Training

The Institute of Rural Health, with grant funding provided through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), has launched a program to train 80 percent of Idaho's health-care workforce, approximately 33,000 persons, by the end of 2008.

Trainings include recognition and management of bioterrorist, all hazards and natural disaster emergency events. In order to span the state and reach the hundreds of health-care facilities, IRH is employing cutting-edge distance-learning methodologies to touch the hard-to-reach, rural, and busy health-care professionals.

Virtual grand rounds, Web casts, virtual table-top exercises and drill simulations, seminars, simulation lab hands-on scenarios, satellite broadcasts, and on-site courses are becoming available. Modules include everything from anthrax to zoonotic diseases.

The project team consists of faculty and staff from Pocatello and Boise. IRH has teamed up with ISU-Boise's Institute of Emergency Management and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to offer the online courses through the Learning Management System.
