Course Objectives

HEALTH EDUCATION

HE 200 Promoting Wellness
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
·  Define wellness.
·  List factors that influence health behavior change decisions.
·  Describe characteristics of an emotionally healthy person.
·  Recognize and assess the distress in his/her own life and identify strategies for managing stress.
·  Identify the behaviors and beliefs of sexually mature individuals.
·  Define addiction and identify the stages of addiction.
·  Identify the components of a healthful diet and evaluate his/her own diet.
·  List the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer.
·  Name, describe, and give examples of factors that contribute to the disease process.
·  Discuss the aging process.
·  Define death, dying and identify Kubler-Ross's stages of dying.

HE 201: Trust & Self-Esteem

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
·  Define trust and self-esteem
·  Identify positive and negative factors that affect trust and self-esteem
·  Explain how trust and self-esteem affect a person's health
·  Discuss the role of trust and self-esteem have in various settings including school, home, work
·  Facilitate activities that develop trust and enhance self-esteem
·  Describe the interdependent relationship among trust, self-esteem, problem solving and cooperation
·  Develop group process skills and learning

HE 210 Medical Terminology

The primary objectives of HE 210 Medical Terminology are that students, upon completion of the course, will:
·  Have developed a substantial knowledge of the meanings of word roots, prefixes and suffixes that are used to form medical terms,
·  Be able to determine literal meanings from medical terms based on word construction,
·  Be able to construct medical terms for specific meanings using component word parts and the rules for use of combining vowels,
·  Know the appropriate use of different forms of medical terms, i.e., terms representing nouns, adjectives, patronyms, etc.
·  Develop confidence in pronunciation of medical terms.

HE 211: Elementary School Health Methods

The students will be able to:
1. Explain the components of a comprehensive school health program and the role/responsibility of the teacher.
2. Describe different teaching methods for implementing health education in the elementary school.
3. Demonstrate competence in presenting a specific health topic to elementary school children.
4. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the health issues children, parents and educators face in today's world.

HE 340: FITNESS/WELLNESS

THE STUDENT WILL:
1. Identify risk factors, which contribute to poor health.
2. Administer various health/fitness appraisals.
3. Analyze and interpret health/fitness appraisal results and compare to established norms.
4. Develop personalized prescription for exercise, diet, weight control, stress management and other health behaviors, which contribute to high level health.
5. Explore, analyze and apply disease risk reduction counseling strategies.
6. Analyze and interpret health promotion program data.
7. Research professional articles for information on two health topics and write a newsletter article (not to exceed one page) on each of the two topics. Each article is to be formatted via a computer program, and must include at least one graphic per article.

HE 383 Epidemiology

The primary objectives of HE 383 Epidemiology are that students, upon completion of the course, will:
·  Understand how disease patterns develop and vary within human populations and how these patterns compare to those of disease in individual human beings,
·  Understand the role various factors of the host (human being), agent and environment affect patterns of disease in human populations.
·  Understand how the use of various rates, ratios and proportions and the various measures of risk are used to define and explore patterns of disease in human populations,
·  Be able to interpret results and understand the limitations of the various types of scientific investigations (case studies, retrospective studies, prospective studies, experimental studies, and theoretical studies) conducted when dealing with disease in human populations.

HE 401-04 Women's Health Issues

Students will gain knowledge on the aspects of women's health that are uniquely different from those of men, and have a forum in which to discuss and learn about these unique issues.

HE 420 Health Program Planning, Presentation, and Evaluation

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
·  Identify the differences between health education and health promotion.
·  Recognize the various models available as frameworks for planning a program.
·  Demonstrate an understanding and basic skills of assessing population needs for program planning.
·  Demonstrate the steps of program planning.
·  Identify the concepts and tools of implementing a health education program.
·  Define the components of program evaluation.
·  Demonstrate oral presentation skills for proposing a program to stakeholders.

HE 425g: Patient Education

The Student will:
1. Analyze the patient educator/client relationship and strategies for promoting health behavior change/maintenance.
2. Analyze critical goals and objectives to be addressed in patient education
settings.
3. Analyze and practice the delivery of the KearMac Patient Education communication Process.
4. Demonstrate competence in the use of the KearMac Process and facilitation of the behavior change process for patients.

HE 491/591 Nutrition and Weight Control

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
·  State the extent of the problem of overweight in the U.S.
·  Identify causes of overweight and underweight.
·  Discuss adverse effects of overweight on an individual.
·  Describe a healthful weight management program.
·  Develop a realistic weight management plan for an individual.

HE 491/591 Nutrition and Herbal Supplements

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
·  Compare and contrast herbal use with common health suggestions
·  Discuss the regulation of herbs in the United States.
·  Differentiate between credible and noncredible web sites.
·  Discuss the potential role of herbal supplements in health care.
·  Discuss potential risks of uninformed use of herbal supplements.

HE 491/591 Nutrition in Childhood


HE 473

Students will learn to package, position, frame, and reframe their programs utilizing market strategies to appeal to the core values of the public and policy makers-a new arena for health educators.

HE 490

Undergraduate students will receive hands-on supervised experience at approved health education work-sites chosen to match future desired employment.

HE 655

Graduate students will receive hands-on supervised experience at approved health education work-sites chosen to match future desired employment.
