Undergraduate Health Education Program

Effective Fall 2009, the Undergraduate Health Education Program will be implementing changes to its curriculum and program requirements.
Current and prospective students seeking admission to the undergraduate health education program during the Spring or Summer 2009 are required to meet the new degree requirements and admission criteria.
Overview
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the undergraduate Health Education (HE) program of the Department of Health & Nutrition Sciences at Idaho State University.
There is little doubt in today's world that health promotion and disease prevention strategies are on nearly every national health care agenda. As a society, we have learned that a full measure of health and a better quality of life are within the grasp of most people. The lifestyle choices a person makes today may influence that individual's health forever.
The undergraduate HE program prepares students to work with individuals, groups, and organizations to educate and facilitate the voluntary adoption of actions and behaviors conducive to health. Students are also prepared to perform the following seven areas of responsibilities and competencies of entry-level health educators as described by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC):
- Assess individual and community needs for health education
- Plan health education strategies, interventions, and programs
- Implement health education strategies, interventions, and programs
- Conduct evaluation and research related to health education
- Administer health education strategies, interventions, and programs
- Serve as a health education resource person
- Communicate and advocate for health and health education
Graduates with a major in health education are eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) national certification offered through NCHEC. According to NCHEC, the benefits of the CHES designation include: establishes a national standard, attests to the individual's knowledge and skills, assist employers in identifying qualifed health education practitioners, develops a sense of pride and accomplishment, and promotes continued professional development.

Accreditation
The School Health emphasis of the undergraduate Health Education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
