Degree Requirements

Application Procedures

A formal application for admission in either a major or a minor is required of all students.  Students interested in a health education major or minor should review and complete the respective major or minor application criteria.  For assistance with your program application, please call 282-2729 or visit the HNS office in Reed Gym #105 to schedule a meeting with a faculty member/advisor.

Application Criteria

MAJORS ONLY

Current Idaho State University students who have met the prerequisites listed on the application form may apply for program admission during the first semester of their sophomore year.  The following criteria must be met for an applicant to be eligible for consideration for admission to the MAJOR in health education:

  1. A minimum of a 2.75 cumulative GPA at the time of application.
  2. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in the following courses with a “C-” grade or better:
  1. A 150-word statement of your philosophy concerning health education
  2. A statement describing an occupational goal that includes the use of health education.
  3. The student must present a current first aid and CPR card to her/his advisor.

Program Requirements

All students accepted into the health education program must maintain at least a 2.75 GPA during their undergraduate studies.

MAJORS

A minimum of 128 semester credit hours to include:

  1. Completion of the University general education requirements (see Academic Information and Graduation Requirements). Courses which fulfill both general education goals and major requirements:

*Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science may substitute 12 hours in physical or biological sciences for Goals 4 and 5.

  1. Completion of the following required courses:
  1. Completion of the Health Education Major Core Requirements (21 credits).
  2. Completion of the courses from one of the two degree emphasis areas or degree option listed below.  Students selecting the school health emphasis are encouraged to complete coursework toward a teaching minor or second teaching major. In addition, students wishing to teach must also complete all College of Education course requirements.
  3. Completion of elective courses.  Elective courses should be selected according to the student's interests and career needs, in conjunction with a faculty advisor.  The total number of elective credit hours may include course prerequisites for general education requirements and is dependent on the health education major emphasis area selected.
  4. Credits earned in a health education course with a grade of lower than a "C-" will not be counted towards the health education major requirement, but will be calculated in the total credit calculation toward graduation.
  5. Present a current first aid and CPR card to her/his faculty advisor.

Students in the school health emphasis must also complete the Professional Education Core and Student Teaching Internship (44 credits) from the College of Education (see Secondary Teacher Education requirements)
