Idaho Yesterdays
Cooperating state agencies have helped save Idaho Yesterdays, the journal devoted to the Gem State 's history.
Since 1957, Idaho Yesterdays has been a valuable academic journal of Idaho history – indeed, the only academic journal devoted specifically to the study of Idaho history and culture – and a vehicle for educating students and the public.
Due to state budget cuts, the Idaho State Historical Society suspended publication of the journal in 2002. Idaho State University and other state-funded institutions of higher learning are currently working with the ISHS collaboratively to produce the Journal.
The ISHS publishes and distributes Idaho Yesterdays. An editorial board, including representatives from all of Idaho 's institutions of higher learning, makes decisions on what content will appear in the journal. ISU is responsible for producing the editorial content of the journal.
“With the way funding has changed within our agency we were unfortunately forced to eliminate the publication as one of the cutbacks,” said Steve Guerber, ISHS executive director. “We are very pleased we could come up with a cooperative effort to bring it back and ISU was certainly an important factor in seeing that this academic journal was published again.”
“Idaho Yesterdays is the only academic journal devoted to Idaho history, and that is important in itself,” said Dr. Laura Woodworth-Ney, ISU assistant history professor, and who is Idaho Yesterdays' new editor. “Part of ISU's mission is training secondary education majors, many of whom teach Idaho history in our schools. It is important to maintain the journal for them, and for academics and the public interested in our great state's history. I am excited about our cooperation with the Idaho State Historical Society and other institutions to continue publishing the journal. It is interesting to see how the journal is evolving. Because of this cooperative effort, we have the opportunity to take academic history to a broader audience.”
Two editions of Idaho Yesterdays have thusfar been published, funded partly by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council.
The journal is available to the public through a subscription managed by the Idaho State Historical Society, and the journal has a web site (managed by Dr. Todd Shallat at Boise State University). Please visit us at http://www.idahoyesterdays.com.
