HISTORICAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Graduate Student Handbook
|
This page is designed for students entering or currently enrolled in the M.A. program in Historical Resources Management at Idaho State University. It lists information on important stages to keep in mind as one progresses through the program, common forms, suggested equipment for students, and links of interest in historical GIS and for ISU graduate students.
TIMELINE OF PROGRESS
First Semester |
- Meet with graduate program director to discuss research focus (thesis or non-thesis) and identify advisor and committee member.
- Use HIST 600, HIST 610, and other courses to help shape the scope, scale, historiography, and major questions of your research.
|
Second Semester |
- Begin regular meetings with your advisor to discuss your research, outside of regular coursework.
- Begin identifying possible internship opportunities.
- Decide whether to pursue the thesis or non-thesis option.
|
|
- Complete Program of Study, including approval by the Graduate School (no later than semester prior to graduation).
|
Final Semester |
-
Apply for graduation prior to established Graduate School due date, early in the semester
-
Complete required internship either prior to or during this semester
-
Students completing a thesis must enroll in thesis credits and arrange with committee for defense prior to Graduate School deadlines.
-
Non-thesis students must complete written and oral exams prior to Graduate School deadlines.

STUDENT FUNDING
- Funding from the department is limited to the number of research and teaching assistantships available each year, which varies. The department makes offers for funding in the spring or summer for positions that begin in August. Applicants and current students should inform the graduate program director by March 1 if they would like to be considered for an assistantship. Admissions applications submitted in full by March 1 receive priority over later applicants for funding.
- Non-resident tuition waivers are available to students in the HRM program, though on a competetive basis with students from other technology-related degrees. Please consult the following web page, or the Graduate School office for information on how to apply for these: http://www.isu.edu/graduate/financial.shtml#non_resident_tuition_waivers
- Residents of Utah usually may pay in-state tuition at ISU. Apply to the Graduate School.
- General information on funding graduate education at ISU can be found at: http://www.isu.edu/graduate/financial.shtml
SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT
Our program deals with cutting-edge technology requiring students to have access to capable hardware and software systems. Some hardware is available on campus; however, the History Department recommends a laptop with the following hardware configurations as a minimum for students in the GIS track:
- 2.4 GHz Processor
- 14" Screen
- 4GB Memory
- 250 GB Hard Drive (An external hard drive may be useful, too)
- Wireless and Bluetooth capability
Some software, such as a temporary student license to ArcGIS, is often available. Ask Dr. Sarah Hinman for further information.
