The effects of oxidative stress on cardiovascular health and function.
Description of Research:
Oxidative stress is caused by the production of excessive amounts of reactive molecules by cells. Oxidative stress occurs in response to aging and exercise, and can contribute to the development of many diseases such as atherosclerosis. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the gas that causes the smell of rotten eggs and hot springs, has recently been identified as an important biological signaling molecule. My research centers on the role H2S plays in the cardiovascular system as related to oxidative stress.
