About the Department of Languages and Literatures
The Arts and Sciences disciplines form the core of the university and support Idaho State University's General Education program and extensive professional programs. Within Arts and Sciences, the Department of Languages and Literatures responds constantly to the changing and increasingly complex needs of our students and the professions they serve, fulfilling a special responsibility to provide a quality undergraduate education to Southeastern Idaho's culturally diverse population.
We contribute to the general education of students by imparting an awareness of languages, literatures, and civilizations, preparing future educators, and providing intercultural communication skills necessary for success in a wide variety of fields. The comprehensive approach of our diverse and challenging programs provides expertise necessary to flourish in an increasingly competitive and complex global society and economy both inside the United States and beyond its borders. We prepare students to become involved citizens of a multicultural nation, to adopt a global perspective that allows them to think critically and to solve problems creatively.
Majors will receive a broad grounding in language, literature, and culture in preparation for graduate studies or as a start to a career in other areas where proficiency in a language and in-depth understanding of cultures other than English are assets. A degree from our department combines well with other fields such as Health Care, Computer Science, Political Science, Business, Anthropology, English, Law Enforcement, International Studies or Education.
