ISU Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements

Scholastic Probation and Dismissal

You will be placed on academic probation if your ISU grade point average falls below the following minimum standards:

Probation Scale
Credits Attempted
(including transfer)
Minimum ISU GPA
1-25 1.75
26 and up 2.00

Once placed on academic probation, you must attain a semester GPA of 2.00 or higher or you will be academically dismissed.

If you are on academic probation and attain a semester GPA of 2.00 or higher the following semester, but fail to attain an accumulative ISU GPA above the minimum standards established for your class, you will remain on academic probation, but you will be eligible to continue taking classes.

If you are on academic probation and complete the following semester with an accumulative ISU GPA above the minimum standards established for your class, you will be taken off academic probation.

Petitioning for Reinstatement After Dismissal

You may petition the Readmission Review Board to appeal any lay out period. Petitions are available in the Supplemental Academic Advising Office (Administration Building, Rm. 316), Registration and Records, or the Office of Admissions (Museum Building, 3rd Floor, Rm. 319).

Your petition must include:

If you are planning to return to the same major at the time of your dismissal, a recommendation on your petition from the dean, associate dean, or a faculty member of your major college is required.

Repeat Policy

You may repeat a course if you wish to improve your grade point average.

The last course taken will have the credit and grade figured into your accumulative grade point average and your total credits.

Although the grade and credit from the first course will not be figured into your gpa and total credits, it will not be removed from your transcript.

An "R" will appear on your transcript next to the credit and grade of the first course.

A "#" will appear next to the credit and grade of the repeated course.

Deletion of ISU Grades from Computation of GPA

Grades may be petitioned for deletion from your grade point average under the following conditions:

Elimination of computation of courses from the grade point average by petition also results in the elimination of the corresponding credit.

The change will not be made to your academic record until the conclusion of one semester in the new curriculum.

Courses that satisfy any general education requirements in the university cannot be removed from the GPA, even if alternate courses meeting the requirement have been taken.

This policy applies only to courses taken at ISU. If you wish to have grades received at another school removed from your record, you must petition that school.

How to Avoid Dismissal

First, avoid probation! Make sure that your accumulative GPA is above 1.75 if you have less than 26 credits or 2.00 if you have more than 26 credits. If you are already on probation, you must earn a 2.00 GPA for the Semester (regardless of how many credits you have accumulated) or you will be dismissed.

Some suggestions:

  1. Visit with an advisor prior to registering for classes to determine a reasonable schedule to increase your chances of passing all of your courses.
  2. Cut down on the hours you are working outside of school.
  3. Cut down on the credits in which you are enrolled.
  4. Cut down on socializing or extracurricular activities that interfere with class attendance or study time.
  5. Do not miss a single class.
  6. Get a tutor early in the semester.
  7. Talk with each of your professors regularly.
  8. Study 2-3 hours for every one hour of class time.
  9. Withdraw from courses if you will be unable to pass.
  10. Meet with an advisor regularly and make decisions in consultation with him/her.
