Terri Blair
Lecturer in English
EDUCATION
M.A. in English (2000), Eastern Illinois University
B.A. in English (1999), Eastern Illinois University
I began teaching at I.S.U. in the fall of 2000, where I have taught English 90, 101, 102 and 110. I especially enjoy teaching Critical Reading & Writing and Introduction to Literature, because learning to read critically is such a foundational skill for college students, and my love of literature is what made me go into the field of English in the first place.
I received my Master’s Degree in English from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, where I did my thesis on "Delight, Subversion and Truth in The Canterbury Tales: Chaucer’s Talking Birds." I’m usually able to at least mention The Canterbury Tales in my classes, if only to point out how much the English language has changed and continues to change over time.
I see my role here in the ISU English department as both instructor and mentor, because, in addition to teaching, I try to help my students discover their own writing talents, as well as help them learn to appreciate literature. Whether I’m teaching writing or literature, I focus on the craft that goes into good writing and good literature. I believe that the writing and reading skills that are emphasized in these classes will help students succeed in whatever major they end up pursuing.
