Bethany Hurst
Instructor in English
EDUCATION
M.F.A. in Creative Writing (2003),
Eastern Washington University
B.A. in English (2000), Colorado State University
I’ve always identified myself in relation to the West. I grew up in Colorado and have also lived in Washington. Idaho has been my home since I started teaching at ISU in 2003.
I think of myself as both a writer and a teacher of writing; these roles should ideally be synchronous. Whether I’m teaching creative writing or composition, I seek to position myself in the classroom as a fellow writer. I experience the same writing struggles, challenges, and triumphs as my students.
Primarily I write poetry, so I find a lot of pleasure in teaching creative writing courses. I enjoy the lively and cooperative atmosphere of the creative writing workshop; I love being surprised and impressed by student work.
I also enjoy working with the arts in the community; I’m a member of the Pocatello Arts Council and the co-director of the Rocky Mountain Writers’ Festival. I think it’s important that creative writing doesn’t occur in a vacuum; instead, writing should be living, breathing, and interactive.
