Undergraduate Studies in English

At the Marathon Reading

English studies include courses about the nature of language, courses that explore human experience as represented in imaginative literature, and courses that develop general and specialized writing skills.

This curriculum serves two broad purposes:

  1. it contributes to the general education, the personal enrichment and fulfillment, of students in all disciplines, and
  2. it leads to degrees with majors or minors.

The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in English, as well as an Associate of Arts, and also a Minor in English.  Additionally, the Department supports teaching majors and minors in English for College of Education programs.  English majors choose to specialize in one of three tracks: General Literature, Professional Writing, or Creative Writing.  Complete descriptions of all of the major options and graduation or program requirements are available in the ISU Undergraduate Catalog

Student ReadingEquipped with an undergraduate degree in English, students are prepared to enter graduate degree programs, to pursue training in such professions as medicine, law, or religion, or to embark upon a great variety of careers in government, business, or industry that demand broad, liberal perspectives and strong observational, fact-finding, analytical, and communication skills.  Additionally, English majors (with proper certification) are well prepared for careers in secondary education.

Inquiries regarding undergraduate programs in English should be directed to the Department Chair, Dr. Margaret Johnson (see contact information below).

Undergraduate Courses in English Composition and Language

The Department of English offers a variety of writing classes including the Goal 1 courses ENGL 101, English Composition, and ENGL 1102, Critical Reading and Writing.  Goal 1 is satisfied when the student has passed ENGL 1102 with a grade of “C” or better.  Additional courses in English composition and language are described in more detail in the ISU Undergraduate Catalog.

Undergraduate Courses in English Literature

The Department of English offers literary surveys, historical period study, and genre-focused courses, as well as area courses in women's literature and ethnic literature, among others.  Goal 7, “to understand how major works of literature explore the human condition and examine human values,” can be satisfied by one of the following: ENGL 1110, Introduction to Literature; ENGL 1115, Major Themes in Literature; ENGL 2257, Survey of World Literature I; ENGL 2258, Survey of World Literature II.  All English literature courses and descriptions are described in the ISU Undergraduate Catalog.
