The Department of English and Philosophy represents two core fields in the humanities. As committed teachers and scholars, we seek to understand the human experience through the study of areas such as literature, language, ethics, and logic.

Our programs offer small classes that allow for personal interaction with professors and fellow students. Our goal is to promote clear and innovative thinking, skillful writing, and intellectual engagement with key ideas in our fields.

In English, undergraduates can choose to major or minor in literature, creative writing, or professional writing. We also offer a minor in Linguistics through cooperation with other departments on campus. Philosophy offers a unified major or minor.

Graduate studies are available in English through our M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Our programs provide the training and knowledge students need to develop as scholars of written and spoken texts. A distinctive feature of our programs is our strong emphasis on gaining practical skills for teaching literature and composition. Students may also pursue a Graduate Certificate in TESOL, either as an extension of their graduate studies or as a stand-alone course of study.

Studying English and Philosophy provides students with excellent preparation for professional employment in any area where the close examination of written texts and the ability to write is important. We take special pride in working with students to connect their immediate studies in our department with their long-term goals.
