Educational Methodology for Health Professions Educators

This interactive online course is designed to provide educators background in best practices in educational methodologies as they apply to instructional design. Topics covered will include evaluating learning styles and needs along with development of learning objectives, learning strategies, instructional materials, and evaluation tools. Ongoing application of new learning to the participants' work setting is a critical aspect of the course. Students will develop or revise a course as the final project. Students taking the course for credit should plan for approximately 6 hrs/week to complete course-related learning activities.
NOTE: This course will prepare dental hygiene educators to meet the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standard 3-7 by providing “background in appropriate educational methodology”.
Technical Requirements: (1) high speed internet connection with access to a computer (2) ability to transmit Word and Excel documents.

Educational Strategies in Online Learning for Health Professions Educators

This interactive online course is designed to provide educators background in best practices in creating effective computer-mediated distance education. The challenges and benefits of teaching online vs. face-to-face will be explored. Topics covered will include the transition from classroom to online teaching/learning, creating the learner-centered online course, and development of evaluation tools. Ongoing application of new learning to the participants' work setting is a critical aspect of the course. Students will develop or revise an online course as the final project. Ideally students will have access to construct their online course site at their institution to fully benefit from application of their learning. Students taking the course for credit should plan for approximately 6 hrs/week to complete course-related learning activities.

The following courses will have limited seats for non-degree seeking students:
DENT605 Program Planning & Evaluation (3 credits)
An overview of general principles of teaching, learning and evaluation in academic and community oral health programs. Emphasis on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs.
DENT610 Special Care Populations (2 credits)
Concepts related to providing oral health care for special care populations. Emphasis on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for individuals with transient or lifelong physical, mental, medical or social health needs.
DENT620 Advanced Educational Theory & Methods (3 credits)
Study of theory, principles, and research related to the faculty role in active teaching and learning, development of ethical reasoning, critical thinking and reflective judgment, development of curricular frameworks, outcomes and competencies, and course delivery methods. PREREQ: DENT 605 or DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL (pending).
DENT630 Rural & Community Health Programs (3 credits)
Rural and Community Health Programs 3 credits. Study of theories, epidemiology, cultural competence, and trends impacting rural and community healthcare programs. Emphasizes needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of oral health promotion/disease prevention programs and service-learning opportunities. COREQ: DENT 605 OR DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL.
These courses require a minimum of 3 hours per credit to complete associated reading, discussion and assignments.

Registration Procedure for Non-Degree Seeking Student Wanting College Credit
Information about admissions as a non-degree seeking student can be found at the ISU Admissions webpage http://www.isu.edu/enroll/admissions/index.shtml or the ISU Graduate School website http://www.isu.edu/departments/graduate/howapply.shtml where you can apply online. The application/admissions process may take a minimum of 6-8 weeks so plan ahead!
Items that need to be submitted include:
- Proof of graduation from a baccalaureate program which can be an unofficial transcript with your degree listed along with completion of the ISU Graduate School application
- Completed MSDH application (required for those seeking graduate credit only)
Up to 9 credits can be taken as a non-degree seeking student. These credits may be transferred to other universities and colleges as electives, check with your local institution.
