Primary Purposes

The primary purposes of the Arthur D. Tranmer Dental Hygiene Clinic are to educate dental hygiene students to become competent professionals and to increase the public's awareness of oral health. Patient care provides dental hygiene students with a variety of experiences to prepare them to serve the public in the future. We believe that quality dental hygiene care is important to the total well-being of every patient treated.

The Teaching Environment

Thank you for visiting our dental hygiene clinic online. We hope you will take a few moments to review the following information concerning your experiences as a dental hygiene patient. In making an effort to be here today you are expressing a concern for your health.

We request that each patient complete a comprehensive health history prior to beginning treatment. All dental records are confidential and will be used only when you are receiving care at our facility. A copy of your records and x-rays can be transferred to your dental office by request of the dentist. All HIPPA regulations are followed at our clinic.

Please understand this clinic is a teaching/learning environment; therefore, increased time will be required for completion of services. At the same time, fees for services are nominal.

The students and faculty will always strive to provide dental hygiene care in a considerate and respectful manner while providing you with the most current standards of care. At your final appointment we would appreciate your comments about the treatment received. A patient questionnaire is available in the reception area.

Appointment Scheduling

Appointments can be arranged by telephoning the clinic receptionist or through a dental hygiene student. Multiple appointments are usually necessary for completion of treatment, and patients work with the same student each appointment. Appointment length ranges from 30 minutes to 3 hours, but the average appointment lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Because the clinical services are provided to educate future dental hygienists effective use of clinical time is essential. Therefore, department policies have been established about cancelled and failed appointments. If you cancel or do not come to two or more confirmed appointments, the student will be permitted to discontinue your care and refer you to a private practice dental office. If you should need to cancel your appointment, please do so within 24 hours of the scheduled time.

Payment and Insurance

Payment of fees is requested at the time service is rendered. If you are an ISU student, we reserve the right to withhold grades or transcripts until payment for services is received. Refunds are extended to those who choose not to continue treatment when care has not progressed beyond the oral assessment. The Dental Hygiene Clinic is recognized by dental insurance companies; however, it is the patient's responsibility to verify insurance coverage and pay the remaining balance. The clinical receptionist is available to assist you in this matter.

Patient Treatment Rights

After an assessment has been completed, an explanation of recommended treatment, treatment alternatives, expected outcomes of various treatments, and the risk of no treatment will be explained. Once you understand the information about each procedure, consent for care will be requested. You also have the right to refuse treatment at any time. Prior to initiating your care, costs will be explained. The student will strive to complete all treatment that has been discussed.

When treatment is completed, a referral to your dentist will be made as we cannot legally perform all dental care needed [e.g.: diagnostic exam for restorative work (fillings), root canal therapy, periodontal (gum) surgery, etc.]. If at any time during or after treatment you wish complete and current information about your care, please contact the clinic receptionist or your student dental hygienist.

The ISU Dental Hygiene Clinic operates using strict infection control practices as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These practices are incorporated to protect you, the patient, as well as the student dental hygienist and faculty.

Location

The Dental Hygiene Clinic is located directly across from the campus library on the corner of Martin Luther King and South 9th Avenue.
