USA Science and Engineering Festival
Idaho State University is proud to be an Official Partner of the inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival to be held in the greater Washington DC area in October 2010. The Festival, which will be the country’s first national science festival, is a collaboration of over 500 of the country’s leading science and engineering organizations and aims to reignite the interest of our nation’s youth in the sciences. The culmination of the Festival will be a two-day Expo on the National Mall on October 23-24, 2010, which will give children, teens and adults the opportunity to explore all facets of science & engineering through hundreds of fun, hands-on activities. People across the United States are encouraged to hold Satellite Events in their communities the same weekend that hundreds of thousands of people celebrate science on the National Mall. The Idaho Satellite Festival will showcase science in Idaho. Our goal is to have booths from colleges/universities as well as local industries and companies. Already, we have signed up multiple booths with hands-on activities from science departments from Idaho State University. We are still recruiting booths from all over state. Our goal is to have 1,000 K-12 kids and their families participating in this free event.
We expect to increase community engagement in science and technology and create not only a greater awareness of science and engineering. We believe our Festival will have the following outcomes:
- The interest of Idaho's youth in science and engineering will be re-invigorated.
- More Idaho students will pursue science and engineering related careers and take leadership roles in science and engineering.
- We will educate Idaho on the opportunities for employment in the science and technology sector and connect potential employees with the science and technology industry.
- Festival momentum will help drive year-round student involvement in science and engineering education initiatives.
- Awareness of the fundamental contributions of science and engineering to our environment will increase.
- A more educated populace will be better able to understand important science-related issues such as stem cells, genome sequencing, bio-fuels and cloning.
