Sports Hall of Fame
History
The Sports Hall of Fame was established in the 1960s by past athletic director John Vesser and other members of the Athletic Department staff.
When the Athletic Department made its move from Reed Gym to the Minidome, now Holt Arena, the Sports Hall of Fame board and all the records were lost. The Sports Hall of Fame fell by the wayside.
When Bob Hilliard became president of the Alumni Board of Directors in 1977, he set his goal to resurrect the Sports Hall of Fame. The Sports Hall of Fame again became an active awards program.
With Dubby Holt as Chairman, guidelines were established and a committee consisting of past Sports Hall of Fame inductees was organized.
In 1994, the Hall of Fame found a new home. Visitors are invited to take a stroll through the Hall of Fame, now located in the Sports & Orthopaedic Center at ISU, where plaques for each member are displayed. In addition, a Sports Hall of Fame display is housed in Holt Arena. A brass plate bearing the name of each member is placed on the display under bronze figures representing nine different sports.
Qualifications
Guidelines for admission in the Sports Hall of Fame are:
- Candidates must have attended the Academy of Idaho, Idaho Technical Institute, University of Idaho Southern Branch, Idaho State College or Idaho State University for at least one year.
- Candidate must have excelled in one of the intercollegiate sports program.
- Candidate must have been out of school for at least 10 years.
- Only members of the Sports Hall of Fame selection committee will be voting members.
- Much consideration shall be given to nominees for recognition received, as well as for contributions to the university after leaving the institution.
