Outstanding Student Achievement Awards

O.S.A. Recipients for 2009 Named (see bottom of page)

Outstanding Student Achievement nominations are now closed for 2009 and open for the 2010 school year.

Overview

Each year, the ISU Alumni Association seeks to recognize outstanding seniors who have excelled in their programs, their extracurricular activities and have generally epitomized ISU's outstanding student body.

About the Award

This award honors one graduating senior from each college and three from the College of Arts and Sciences, one master's student and one final year doctoral student from the School of Graduate Studies. Each year, eleven students are honored as award recipients.

Faculty, staff, students, and alumni are invited to nominate senior students who meet the selection criteria and who graduated in December 2009, or who will graduate in May 2010 or August 2010. Nominations and supporting materials are reviewed by various selection committees who then select each recipient.

OSA recipients are honored at a reception in April, 2010 at the Bistline Theater and the Samuel Horne Bennion Promenade. Award recipients receive medals and give short acceptance speeches.

The Alumni Association sponsors this program and presents it in partnership with ISU's academic colleges.

History of the OSA Awards

Several years ago, the ISU Alumni Association saw the need for a formal program to recognize student excellence. Idaho State University has many outstanding students, and it is important that we honor them in as many ways as possible. Recognition and appreciation of effort and dedication can only encourage more excellence and achievement.

The Outstanding Student Achievement Awards are our way of affirming current students who are our future alumni.

Each year, deans, faculty, staff and students from each college nominate students whose qualities they characterize as outstanding. A selection committee is established for each college. These committees are composed of faculty members, alumni and students of each college. Each committee reviews the nominees for its college and selects an award recipient. Students who nominate fellow students must have the nomination form endorsed my a member of the ISU faculty.

After the committees name the award recipients, each winner is notified and invited to attend an awards reception held in their honor. Typically, this awards reception is held during the last week of April each year.

The ISU Alumni Association, sponsor of this academic awards program, gratefully acknowledge the deans, faculty members, staff and students who make nominations year after year as well as the selection committee members who were willing to make the difficult choices from among the many worthy nominees.

Qualification

For undergraduate nominees: Selection should be based on three areas: academic achievements/honors; career-related experience, and extra-curricular activities. An Outstanding Student Achievement Award nominee should be a well-rounded and successful member of our campus and community. Tie-breaking areas of selection can include leadership activities and strength of class load as it pertains to each student's major.

For graduate nominees: Selection should be based on three areas: academic achievements/honors; career-related experience, and extra-curricular activities. An Outstanding Student Achievement Award nominee from the graduate school should be a well-rounded and successful member of our campus and community. As all graduate degrees differ in the completion requirements, each candidate will likely come with different degrees of research, published materials and teaching experience. Each selection committee will discuss and weigh the importance of research, published materials and/or the amount of time spent teaching.

Criteria and materials reviewed by selection committees includes:
