Barton Road Ecological Research Area
This
65 acre research site was obtained by Idaho State University in 1996 as
part of an arrangement allowing Ballard Medical Company to build a
manufacturing facility in the ISU Research Park. Located about 3 miles
from the Life Sciences Buildling, this was designated as an ecological
research area in 1996 and is now the site of ongoing experiments testing
the long term effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition and the role of
shrubs in a sagebrush steppe ecosystem. This site also is used as a
field site for laboratory exercises.
This
picture shows a closer view of a 20 x 20 m shrub removal plot. There are
three replicates of this treatment, three replicates of each of two
levels of nitrogen addition, and four control plots. Two neutron probe
access tubes were installed in each plot in 1998 to monitor soil
moisture on these plots.
