Efficient Reading for Scholars       Want to survive hundreds of pages of reading for classes and research? Learn "mapping" to increase your reading speed and comprehension.

Surviving Multiple Choice Tests     Success often depends on understanding the instuctor's logic in constructing questions and on your knowledge of grammar, culture, idioms and synonyms. The instructor gives you some surprising strategies!

Sounding American      Professional actors from many language backgrounds learn how to "sound American" and you can too! Each week learn strategies to lower the accent barrier and reduce the dreaded response, "Sorry, I don't understand you!"

Slanguage       Each session is loaded with info your old English teacher NEVER told you: naughty and nice slang terms, must-know idioms, pop culture tidbits, and snacks. A "happy hour" that gets your nose out of your books!

Active Listening       Learn how to track American speakers. Analyze the organizational pattern, signals and codes used by the speakers. You leave with a written transcript of what you have studied that day.

Orientation to Research and Library Data-base Use      A series of three hands-on sessions that help you choose effective key words for searches, appropriate data-bases, evaluate sources and use information technology at ISU.

Learn why plagiarism is a serious offense, how to avoid it through summarizing, paraphrasing, citing and documentation (in several styles), how to create a Works Cited/References page, and where to find on-line resources.
