Practical Nurse Program - College of Technology
More Information

The Program

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's) help care for physically or mentally ill persons. Under the direction of physicians and registered nurses, LPN's provide care that requires knowledge of the practical nursing. In hospitals, LPN's provide much of the direct care. They provide intravenous therapy, draw blood, assess vital signs, change dressings, administer most prescribed medications, and help patients with personal care. LPN's assist physicians and registered nurses in assessing patients and in carrying out nursing procedures. Some practical nurses perform special nursing procedures and operate sophisticated equipment to provide care for seriously ill or injured patients. In some instances, experienced LPN's supervise hospital attendants and nursing aides. LPN's who work in private homes provide day-to-day patient care that involves highly technical procedures or complicated equipment. They may teach family members how to perform simple nursing tasks. In doctors’ offices and in clinics, LPN's prepare patients for examination and treatment, administer medications, apply dressings, and teach patients prescribed health care regimens. They may also make appointments and record information about patients. This program is available for full time and part time/outreach options.
