  • Typical classroom hours are from 8am to 3pm, 5 days per week

Program Description

Each session builds upon the next increasing competency for skills used in this Industry. According to industry experts, anyone who wants to succeed at their job should have a working knowledge of each area. Depending on the choice made to pursue a certificate or an Associate’s degree, the length of time in each area varies.

Desktop Publishing in Print Media Students will learn the practices to create print ready layouts. In addition, they will learn the standard software used in industry, explore the origins of typography and how the current technology came to be, the technical specifications required to make files interchangeable and printable across platforms, and the techniques required to produce a layout that will catch attention from a viewer and keep it.

Graphic Design The ability to express your creativity takes preparation, time, patience, and the ability to think unconventionally. The Graphic Design courses build fundamental skills and principles of design theory, then shows the student how to apply them to monogram logos, business identities, movie posters, and functional artwork.

Graphic Arts Student

Digital Imposition and Prepress Technical roles are expanding in industry. Students will perform the role of Preflight Operator and be instructed in the latest technology and practices for file exchange, (PDF types, screens, and proofing processes.) Students will also learn the manual application of imposition techniques and offset plate preparation.

Printing It is in this area that the work of the designers and desktop publishers becomes an image on paper. Digital and Offset press operators learn how to prepare the paper, ink, printing plate, and machine for many different types of printed pieces using single- or multiple-color. Color theory and science create a better understanding of the original process and the digital world today.

Bindery Operations Bindery uses operations such as; cutting, folding, and stapling to complete the printed piece. Students gain an understanding of all of these processes by operating the machines that perform finishing operations. Equipment includes: guillotine cutters, angle folders, drill and stitching machines.

    • Graphic Arts-Desktop Publishing/Print Media

Cost of Attendance

Fees apply to the current Idaho State University fee schedule which includes mandatory student health insurance. Students with existing health insurance coverage may waive student health insurance. Waivers are available at http://www.isu.edu/stuhlth/insurance/.
