There are 35 words in the 10 sentences above. This is an abbreviated form of the test, since the full test has 31 items and 125 words. Utley reported the average score on the 125 word original version was 34/125 or 27%. Get the score for this abbreviated version by counting the words correct and dividing by 35. You may also apply a more demanding scoring method in which the entire sentence must be correct to get credit and each correct sentence in this method is worth 10%. Groups of normal hearing college students at ISU typically get a mean score between 35-45%. The scores tend to be a bit better when each word is counted and given credit. You may count contractions like "It's" as two words (It is)
