Chapter 5: Visual Stimuli in Communicaton

Activities

Linguistic Constraints -To demonstrate the concept of linguistic constraint, this activity shows a sentence with four words. Learners begin by guessing what one of the words might be. When a correct word is found, it is displayed. From this, the learner can begin to figure out the other words. The number of tries each word requires is displayed under the word. Common results show many guesses for the first word, less for the next and very few for the last two. A second, and much harder activity has double the number of words.

Tracking Activity - Tracking is a way of measuring how many words are recognized over a given time frame. This activity requires two people, one to read the material and one to repeat the material back. The activity computes the tracking score in terms of words per minute.

Scoring for Utley Sentence Test

There are 35 words in the 10 sentences above. This is an abbreviated form of the test, since the full test has 31 items and 125 words. Utley reported the average score on the 125 word original version was 34/125 or 27%. Get the score for this abbreviated version by counting the words correct and dividing by 35. You may also apply a more demanding scoring method in which the entire sentence must be correct to get credit and each correct sentence in this method is worth 10%. Groups of normal hearing college students at ISU typically get a mean score between 35-45%. The scores tend to be a bit better when each word is counted and given credit. You may count contractions like "It's" as two words (It is). After you have viewed and answered each of the video-clip tests, click here for the answers.
