Overview and Application Process
Program Overview
Nationwide the job market for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists (AUDs) remains extremely robust. Indeed, salaries for SLPs in urban areas have risen steadily, with entry 12 month salaries for masters level clinicians being between $40,000 and $50,000 per year in Boise. Despite this trend, positions for SLPs in rural areas remain a critical issue in Idaho and the Intermountain West.
We have developed a means of allowing school districts and health care centers to “grow their own” SLP professionals within the community setting. The ISU Online Preprofessional Program is designed to significantly reduce the on-campus requirement by allowing students to take their Preprofessional year on-line, off-campus, while maintaining their current work positions and without disturbing their family constellation. Applicants to the program must have a bachelor's degree.
The ISU Online Preprofessional Program in Communication Sciences is a one-year program that provides all the coursework needed for an individual to transition from a bachelor’s level degree to the requirements for entering a Master’s degree program in Speech-language Pathology. The program entails 16 credits of undergraduate coursework in the fall, and another 18 credits in the spring. The department recognizes that some students may need to work while they pursue this coursework, so a student may spread the coursework over a longer period of time, such as two years.
