What are some of your hobbies/interests?
I love to ski. I used to SCUBA dive a lot, but that's hard to do in this area. I love to cook, too. That's the one thing I do a lot.
Why did you choose ISU?
I chose ISU for the D.A. program in Biological Sciences. I always knew I wanted to teach at the undergraduate level and this program was a really good fit for that. I love the experience I got in the D.A. program. I was able to do several supervised teaching internships. This allowed me to plan the class, write exam questions, and do more than a TA who just follows what the professor tells you to do in the class. I also love the research I've been able to do. I have done two projects, one science based called "Mesothelial Cell Autoantibodies Induce Collagen Deposition In Vitro", and one education based called "Using a Case Study to Introduce Undergraduates to Bioinformatics".
Did you have a professor that had a strong impact on you while at ISU?
Actually, there were two that stand out. I was able to work with Rosemary Smith in the classroom as well as on my education research project. It was fun to see how she combines science and education. Jean Pfau is my supervisor for my science research. I have trouble putting into words how great she is. She has been supportive and encouraging.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while at ISU?
The biggest challenge was convincing myself to come. After I was accepted, I got an offer to teach in Denver and it was hard to say no to that. However, Rosemary convinced me. She made me feel like I would fit in here (and I did) and she was so enthusiastic.
What are your career goals?
I would like to teach at an undergraduate level. I want to teach cell biology and continue doing research by working with undergraduates and training them on how to do research. I am also planning to stay for one more year at ISU as a post-doc.
