Christine Brower

Christine Brower is the Director for the Center for New Directions at Idaho State University. Chris earned both the Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2000 and the Master of Public Administration in Political Science in 2002 from Idaho State University.

Chris is a lifelong learner, enjoys the intellectual environment of the University, and is committed to the philosophy that, “education changes lives and benefits all of society.” Her research interests are factors that assist low income individuals enter education programs and barriers to education entry and completion. Chris’ other research interests are social problems and inequality, non-profit social services, social policies, gender, social class, and work and occupations.

Chris encourages ISU students and community members who hold an education or employment goal to meet with a Center for New Directions counselor regarding their career goals, how to access resources to enroll in educational programs, and reduce barriers to achieving their goals. One of Chris’ favorite quotes is by William Hutchinson Murray from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition, (1951):

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of the couplets by Geothe: "Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now."
