Intramural 3 on 3 Basketball Rules

The officiating will be done by an official who is in absolute control of the game. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. The official shall have the power to make decisions on any matters or questions not specifically covered in the rules. Sportsmanship is very important for the flow and consistency of the game. The supervisor reserves the right to call any game in which they feel the teams are not being sportsmanlike.

Intramural 5-on-5 basketball rules will govern play with the following modifications:

1. Matches will be the best 2 of 3 games. A team can win by either scoring 11 points with a lead of two, or by being the first team to score 15 points.

2. All field goals will count as one point, regardless of whether the shot is beyond the three point line or not. Teams will alternate possession on made baskets. The ball must be passed in after made baskets.

3. Odd or even choice determines which team puts the ball in play to start the contest. For the rest of the game the alternating possession rule is in effect. The team who did not start the first game with the ball will begin the second game. If a third game is needed, another odd or even procedure will determine who begins the game with the ball.

4. Every time the ball changes possession, it must be taken back (both feet and the ball) anywhere behind the three-point line. This must be done even if a shot has not been taken. If a team does not take the ball back properly then the play is dead at the first shot attempt by the violating team. This will result in a turnover.

5. Each team will be granted one 30 second time out per game. Substitutions may be made at anytime during a dead ball.

6. Fighting will result in disqualification of both teams.

7. The three second rule will be in effect.

8. No jewelry may be worn. Exception: Medical Alert tags may be worn. No hats or bandannas may be worn by any player on the court.

9. Teams must begin the game with three players, but may finish with a minimum of two players. Teams are allowed to have as many players on their roster as they wish, but may only play a maximum of 5 players per contest.

10. If a foul is called and the shot is made, the basket will count but the ball will change possession (for exceptions see rules 13&14).

11. Knee braces made of hard, unyielding substances covered on both sides with all edges overlapped and any other hard substances covered with at least 1/2 inch of slow recovery rubber or similar material will be allowed.

Championship tournament only

12. All fouls are common fouls. For the first six (6) fouls, the ball will be taken back by the fouled team. Beginning with the seventh (7) team foul, the player fouled will be awarded one (1) free throw. After the free throw the ball will change possession, whether the free throw was made or not. On the eleventh (11) team foul, the player fouled will be awarded one (1) free throw and the shooting team will retain possession, regardless if the free throw is missed.

13. On the seventh (7) team foul, if the shooting team is fouled in the act of shooting and the shot is made: the point is counted, the foul is recorded on the scoresheet, and the ball changes possession. On the eleventh (11) team foul, if the shooting team is fouled in the act of shooting and the shot is made, the point will count and the shooting team will retain possession.

14. If a technical foul is called, the other team will receive a point and be awarded the ball. Two (2) technical fouls on any player will result that player being ejected.

15. In a result of a tie game with time expired, the game will result in sudden death overtime. The first team to score will win the game. The referee will use the odd/even system to determine possession.
