Portneuf
River Monitoring -
Due to the efforts and financial support of a number of organizations,
including Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, the City of
Pocatello,
Three Rivers, Rapid Creek Research, and Idaho State University, the
Portneuf has become one of the best monitored rivers in the United
States. As of
January 2004 there were 6 monitoring stations in the Portneuf and an
additional
station in Marsh Creek, one of the major tributaries to the Portneuf.
Each of
these stations has a multiparameter sonde that records water
temperature,
dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, pH, and turbidity at 15 minute
intervals.
Data from the sondes are uploaded by cell phone every two hours, and
recent
data can be viewed on-line.
Data from these sondes provide detailed information about changes in
water quality over time and in response to individual storm and runoff
events.
