Welcome to the Portneuf River Ecosystem Project

  The land
that drains into the Portneuf River, the Portneuf subbasin, defines a geographic area we call the Portneuf River Ecosystem. Water has shaped the land within this ecosystem, and the river in turn is influenced by the land around it. Water flowing into the Portneuf carries with it evidence of the soils, plants, and animals that live near the river. The river also is impacted by ecosystem processes such as fire, by geological processes that shaped the land within the subbasin, and by human activities such as agriculture, industry, and urbanization.
In these web pages we discuss some of the factors that shaped the Portneuf River Ecosystem in the past, some of the human history of this region, the ecology of this ecosystem, and some of the ways that we are affecting the Portneuf River today. We hope that this information will build a better appreciation for the treasures that the Portneuf River ecosystem contains, and that it will help us make decisions that will protect the natural resources that make it a wonderful place to live.
