The Climate of the Portneuf River Ecosystem

Pocatello and Chubbuck comprise the largest urban area along the Portneuf River. These cities are located about 20 river km from the confluence of the Portneuf with American Falls Reservoir, at an elevation of about 1450m.

The figure to the right is a climate diagram for the Pocatello 2NE reporting station.
At this site average annual temperature is 9.4oC, and precipitation averages 329 mm per year.
May has the highest average precipitation (43 mm), and July and October average the least precipitation.
Average monthly temperatures range from below freezing to nearly 22o C.   From June through September high temps and low precipitation combine to create dry conditions, warm days, and cool nights.

At higher elevations in the Portneuf watershed average temperatures decrease and precipitation increases. Winter snowpack is extremely variable at lower elevations, but can persist well into June at higher elevations in some years.
