Biographical Sketch
Sonja joined the Idaho State University Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS/MT) program when it expanded to Boise in January 2002. As a Clinical Assistant Professor in the CLS/MT program, she has taught many core subjects, including Immunology, Transfusion Medicine (Immunohematology/Blood Bank), Hematology, CLS Research, Phlebotomy, Urinalysis, Waived Testing, and Independent Problems. Sonja is the clinical coordinator for CLS student internships in western Idaho.
Sonja’s involvement in clinical laboratory science education began over twenty years ago. While working as a generalist, at the “bench”, the medical laboratory technology students tended to follow her. The enjoyment gained by sharing the knowledge of the clinical laboratory is what prompted her return to university. Always involved with students, she was a teaching assistant at both the University of British Columbia and at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, while completing her Master degree . A full time teaching position at the Pima Medical Institute in Seattle is what brought Sonja back down to the United States in 1993. Within six months, Sonja became an Associate Degree MLT Program Director and steered the program through successful NAACLS accreditation. In 1996, Sonja joined the Puget Sound Blood Center, as Senior Technical Trainer and was responsible for the training of new employees, MT/CLS students, MLT/CLT students and Medical Residents. In 2000, she took a different career path and accepted new duties as a Technical Consultant in Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs at the Puget Sound Blood Center. It did not take long before she realized that education and teaching was where her heart was. Thus, she was attracted to the Idaho State University Clinical laboratory science program due to its use of distant learning technology, research emphasis, and enthusiasm of clinical affiliates. It has been an incredible four years at ISU, in Boise.
