ISU Bengal Laboratory

The Bengal Laboratory is an independent laboratory operated within the Kasiska Division of Health Sciences. The laboratory offers specialized low-cost clinical laboratory diagnostic and drug testing services to:  ISU Health Center patients; ISU students, faculty, and staff; local community; ISU Health Fair participants; and non-clinical testing and monitoring for veterinary, environmental and food safety applications.  The Bengal Laboratory supports the mission of ISU by promoting on-site clinical experience as well as graduate student research education.

Patient parking is located on the 5th St in front of the Pharmacy building, or metered parking is available in the ISU general parking lot (G1) next to the Museum.

Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic services as requested by a Physician or an authorized healthcare provider accompanied by a prescription or electronic/phone physician order.

Non-Diagnostic Health Maintenance Services
Non-Diagnostic health services are available during scheduled Health Fairs and other related health care events in the Pocatello and surrounding areas.

Self-Referral Services
Health maintenance services that are not ordered by a physician but requested by the patient. Patients with diabetes, cardiac, and chronic disease comprise of the majority of self-referral testing. These tests are performed in conjunction with ISU’s health fairs. These services are not covered by insurance.

Employment Drug Screening
Pre-employment drug screening for ISU health profession students that require screening prior to clinical rotations.

Veterinary and Public Health Diagnostic and Monitoring Services
Some veterinary tests are completed on the same equipment as humans. This service would be available to local Veterinary Clinics that do not have the ability to perform these tests. Coggins testing would be available as this test has to be performed by personnel trained by the Federal APHIS.


Payment Information

Payment is expected at the time of service.  The clinic accepts cash, checks, and debit/credit cards. 

Insurance:  The Bengal Laboratory currently does not accept insurance at this time.  Laboratory credentialing with multiple insurance agencies is currently underway and expected to be complete by the end of 2017.


Benefit to Students

The goal of the Medical Laboratory Science program is to provide students with the background and tools necessary to enter the medical laboratory science profession. The program addresses the broad array of responsibility, requisite education and experience necessary to succeed by providing preparation for entry and advancement at a variety of places and provide tools and opportunities for lifelong advancement and professional engagement.  Additional details can be found at:

Kathleen Spiegel, PhD, MT

Bengal Lab Advisor
Dr. Spiegel has over 30 years of experience in Pathology and Medical Laboratory Sciences. She specializes in transfusion and veterinary medicine. Dr. Spiegel received her PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of Utah.

Rachel Hulse, MS, MLS (ASCP)CM

Program Director
Ms. Hulse has over 10 years of experience in Medical Laboratory Sciences. She specializes in Genetics, Hematology, and Molecular Biology. Ms. Hulse received her Masters degrees in Human Genetics from the University of Utah, and Genetics and Biotechnology from Brigham Young University. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family and playing the violin.

Bengal Lab Manager
Mr. Weideman graduated from the Medical Laboratory Sciences program at ISU and is currently finishing his MS Degree. Mr. Weideman served two tours overseas for the US Air Force Academy. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and camping.

Alicia Wrablick
Bengal Lab Technician
Ms. Wrablick is currently a MS student in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program. She gained a wealth of phlebotomy and lab experience serving as a health service technician in the US Coast Guard. In her free time she enjoys the outdoors, family time, and helping others.
