SOCIOBIOLOGY: THE HUMAN ANIMAL 050210
Genes, not morality, tell us to save a stranger from drowning, or to avoid incest, because morality and justice are rooted in the genetic code. These are some of the findings of sociobiology, a new and highly controversial science, which holds that behavior is biologically determined. Proponents claim that political science, law, economics, psychology, psychiatry and anthropology will all become branches of sociobiology. Its opponents denounce it as reactionary political doc- trine disguised as science, because it could be used to justify social inequality, warfare, compulsory sterilization, even "master race" con- cepts. Sociobiology has inspired the most virulent controversy on campuses today.
