Many companies face lawsuits over claims of harm or injury from prod- ucts. Meanwhile, some might argue that consumers are being denied access to new products because companies fear liability suits. Are all product complaints justified and who are the victims? George Fletcher, Beekman Professor of Law at Columbia University, probes the issues surrounding product liability. He and his panelists track a corpora- tions decision to develop a new contraceptive drug for men in a hypo- thetical scenario designed to bring out critical issues. The panelists deal with a few unsubstantiated claims of birth defects that lead to a major lawsuit and media attention, putting the company into a tailspin and costing millions. Viewers may debate whether litigation ultimately raises prices or stifles innovation.

PROMISE FULFILLED AND THE PROMISE BROKEN, THE PART 10 050042
Discusses the events after World War I that helped shape the 1920's. Woodrow Wilson hailed as the world's savior only to become a scape- goat, later, protests and race riots. America turns within itself and begins a period of mass idiosyncratic frivolity. The invention of the Model-T Ford opened up the horizon of the whole United States to the common man. Mail order catalogs put the store in the family living room. America had become "top dog." It was a time to worship the best in everything: Babe Ruth, Red Grange, Charles Lindberg, Bobby Jones.

In the midst of organizing the campaign King was called away to help black sanitation workers on strike in Memphis, where he was assassinated. In cafes, at rallies, and on trains, they talk about themselves, their love of Hitler, and their disbelief in the Holocaust. In Berlin, they are unexpectedly asked to go to Auschwitz, a place whose existence they mock. Upon meeting a survivor, they shout, "Who cares today?" and for seven uncut minutes argue about the Holocaust. The neo-Nazis finally walk away, and the camera visits the crematorium. "People went in," says the witness, "but they didn't come out. Now ask these chaps, where are they?"

The film establishes the connections be- tween violence and "normal" patterns of male-female behavior. The film also attempts to expand our society's narrow and sexist concept of rape to its real and accurate limits. The notion that rape is an is- olated sexual perversion, the product of an individual's deranged mind is dispelled. Nowhere is the relationship between rape and our cul- ture's sexual fantasy better illustrated than in "Rape Culture"'s ex- amination of popular films and media. The progression develops from brutal sadistic film rapes to the subtle rapes of women's will--always supporting the myth that women want to be raped.
