POST-WAR ERA, THE 050066
Hosted by Henry Fonda. The late forties and early fifties were periods of heavy readjustment, and after a brief production of "returning he- roes" films, Hollywood turned to new mature themes. Films of the period have been referred to as "dark cinema," a metaphor for the dark corners of the mind they explored. Crime, prejudice, mental illness, drugs, alcoholism and a pervading cynicism invaded the screen in such films as "Kiss of Death," "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Lady from Shanghai," "Double Indemnity," "Gentleman's Agreement," "The Snake Pit" and "Lost Weekend." Science fiction films apeared in the early fifties and the offspring of nuclear explosions appeared on the screen in hideous genetic mutations of insects and animals.

Virtually the sole source of learning during the Dark Ages in the West the Bible was used to justify the social order. The superb artistry lavished on its representation and ornamentation, from Carolingian manuscripts to Gothic cathedrals, made the Biblical stories and char- acters central to medieval culture. While the East remained aglow with art and learning, Europe was engulfed in the Dark Ages. It was Charle- magne who undertook to reestablish reading and writing in an illiter- ate Europe, and the Bible became the sole medium for his mission. At the same time, using the Bible to justify his own reign, he laid the foundation for feudal Europe. The program shows some of the most beau- tifully illuminated Bibles as well as that Bible of stone and glass, Chartres Cathedral.

Out of the ashes of the urban rebellions, blacks looked for new ways to take control of their communities; the ballot box, the street and schools became the dominant platforms. In Cleveland, the black comm- unity, together with a segment of white voters, achieved an historic victory: the election of Carl Stokes as the first African-American mayor of a major city. In Oakland, young black men and women attem- pted to confront continuing police harassment by forming the Black Panther Party. While these efforts had varying degrees of success, they never-the-less resulted in greater empowerment for their commun- ities.

PREDATORS, THE 060720
Narrated by Robert Redford, North America's wild predators are shown in a new light--not as fearsome enemies of humans--but as vital parts of a balanced wilderness ecosystem. We meet the bobcat and grizzly and stalking, they search for their prey and in the end, they strike. There is no cruetly, no sentimentality. The predators are seen doing what nature entended them to do--killing to eat. Yet, the "underdog" propensity of humans has led us to condemn the strong and protect the weak. This film may change the way you think about predators. They are important, fascinating and, as much as any wild animals, deserve our respect and love.
