OVER THERE: 1914-1918 080038
German and French newsreels, official army films, suppressed and con- traband films, propaganda productions and films shot by amateur sol- dier-cameramen present one of the most complete wide-range accounts of World War I. Of particular value because it presents the comprehensive French view of the war, in contrast to many films made from the Ameri- can point of view. Events that precipitated the war are graphically shown as activities and attitudes of European leaders are carefully retraced with remarkable newsreel footage from 1914. Scenes of the great battles of Verdun and Mons, and of the hundreds of miles of tre- nches, reveal the horrifying magnitude of "the war to end war." Ends with Versailles, signs of the German's feeling betrayal, and the be- ginnings of Nazism.

PARABLE OF THE SADHU, THE 055551
What happens to an individual's personal code of ethics in the complex and competitive business environment? How do these decisions affect the individual, and in turn, the potential of the organization? In a classic re-creation of a Harvard Business School symposium, host Arthur Miller utilizes McCoy's parable of a Himalayan adventure as a backdrop for a lively and provocative forum on business ethics. The forum offers a variety of responses to essential questions on ethical issues, which impact business on a daily basis: decision-making, shared sense of purpose, the importance of leadership, the need for compromise and non-conformity and the role of the individual and personal ethics. Based on the article by Bowen H. McCoy.

PARADISE LOST 055645
This program investigates the progress of the Bible from the Reforma- tion to the present day: on the one hand, simple and unquestioning faith in the Book has been largely destroyed, while scientists contin- ue to add discoveries that provide historical dimensions to the text. The program begins with Luther in Germany and discusses the fervor and dedication with which some men pursued their belief that the Bible must be translated and made accessible to all. The scientific ration- alism of the 19th century led to archeological expeditions that hoped to find scientific proof of the truth of the Bible. New and vital dis- coveries, like those of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Gnostic library of an Egyptian monastery suggest that more suprises may lie in wait for archeologists.

PARIS COMMUNE, 1871 055614
Paris in 1870 was a city of stark contrasts: Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie ruled over a splendid court; the Universal Exhibition was cel- ebrating the miracles of the Machine Age; Baron Haussmann, redesigning Paris, had unleashed a speculative fever in Parisian real estate; and the poor were forced by higher rents to vacate their living quarters. These were the pre-conditions: the Franco-Prussian War, the siege of Paris, and finally the armistice with Bismarck were the sparks that ignited the battle. The Commune was born, and for one bloody week their was talk of the brotherhood of man and the end of bureaucracy and exploitation. This program shows the conditions that gave rise to the Commune, and the indescribably brutal manner in which the rest of France put an end to the Bloody Week of the Commune.

PARKER ADDERSON, PHILOSOPHER 080031
This story describes the confrontation between the weary Confederate general of a battered army and a Yankee spy whose facile philosophy and flippant concern for life make him a gnawing protagonist. Cap- tured, Parker Adderson displays bravado, disdain for the general's homilies and a sense of prowess in his own verbal jousts. He is test- ed, however, by the general's instinct for what he detects as sham and cant. There is a vicious battle in the general's tent in which an in- nocent young lieutenant is killed and the general badly wounded and, then, a maudlin execution at midnight-- in violation of all the codes of honor concerning ceremonial hangings at daybreak.

PARTING OF THE WAYS, THE PART 06 050118
In America, the synthesis of cultures and musical forms created a new music: the songs of Stephen Foster, the rags of Scott Joplin, the marches of John Pilip Sousa. The Victorian Age ushered in concert hall melodramas and parlor pianos. Sheet music, the movies and the phono- graph shaped musical tastes. In Europe, the old conventions were frag- mented under the impact of the impressionism of Debussy and the splen- dors of Strauss and Mahler. Stravinsky advanced the revolution with "The Rite of Spring."
