DISASTER IN A PLEASANT CLIMATE 055616
The Mediterranean sun did less to temper Mussolini's brand of totalit- arianism than the brakes provided by the Crown and the Church. Italian Fascism was arguably milder than Hitler's Nazism. Still, the intract- able problems of poverty and corruption were even less amenable to solution in Italy; the dreams of reviving the Roman Empire and turning the Mediterranean once more into a Roman sea were not empty boasts but brutal assaults on Abyssinia. Isolated from his former allies, Mussol- ini turned to Hitler and together they intervened in the Spanish Civil War against the popularly-elected Republican government to give the upper hand to Franco. Thus Spain gave birth to the political over- simplification of the age: the bad guys, Fascists, versus the good guys, by default the Communists.

DISCOVERY LECTURE SEREIES: CRISIS IN THE ATMOSPHERE 055851
MAYNARD, MA -- October X, 1989 -- In 1985, a large hole in the ozone layer was discovered above Antarctica. While this unusual discovery surprised many people, Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland viewed it as a warning fulfilled. Over 15 years ago, Rowland predicted critical imbalances in Earth's protective ozone layer, but his warnings were not readily accepted. Rowland was the first scientist to link the release of chloroflurocarbons into the atmosphere, via such things as aerosol propellants, to significant depletion in the ozone layer of the strat- osphere. The discovery of the hole, half the size of Antarctica, served as the catalyst to focus attention on this global problem. EXPIRES 11/15/90

"We were most fortunate that Voyager was ready in 1977 because we were able to capture planetary allignments that occur only once every 176 years," said Stone. Dr. Stone contends that through the revelations of Voyager, there is a great deal of our universe left to be explored. "As we leave the familiar orbits of Earth and venture four billion miles out to Saturn and Neptune, we realize that our planet is but a dot and there is activity and diver- sity never before discovered.

DISCRIMINATING BEHAVIOR PART 08 039137
It is probably true that most discriminations humans make are struct- ured by cognitive processes which are learned at the same time we learn language. Many researchers think that language provides a kind of "cognitive map" which helps one to both recognize and define the world. We see what we are "turned into" seeing because we have words to name and describe readily available. We recognize differences be- tween objects and persons because we are able to organize and express our perceptions through the media of language symbols. We react to these differences through behaviors which were learned while we lear- ned to see the differences themselves.

DISPARAGING BEHAVIOR PART 09 039138
One of the most common complaints of teachers today is that pupils are unresponsive, less motivated to learn, undisciplined and generally less able. In most schools, teachers have a sense of coping with com- plex classroom situations which are increasingly beyond their power to influence. The result is that their morale is often very low and their level of mental fatigue is very high. Teachers everywhere complain of exhaustion, and teacher absence, particularly in the urban areas, is reportedly increasing.

DO SCIENTISTS CHEAT? 055646
Scientists who cheat threaten the integrity of science as well as the public health and welfare. Though still rare, instances of scientific fraud and misconduct appear to be on the rise. As a result, concern about cheating in science is at an all-time high. While the majority of scientists believe research fraud is nothing more than the isolated acts of a few individuals, a growing number of scientists and others believe the flurry of cases that have made headlines in the 1980s are signs of a much bigger problem of unknown and dangerous proportions. This program examines the issue of scientific fraud. It examines why scientists may be less than honest, analyzes how our scientific system deals with quality control, and considers the adequacy of the science community's response when a researcher is involved in fraud.
