Special Class Fees or Assessments
Several courses in the College of Arts and Letters carry class
fees - charges beyond the usual university tuition and fees that pay for extra expenses of delivering the course.
Class fees are charged for a specific course or special activity associated with the course.
Class fees typically go toward:
- Expendable materials such as art supplies and chemicals.
- Special services that enrich a particular class but that are not part of normal courses, such as live models and use of studio equipment.
- Technical help in running equipment.
- Software licenses and prorated hardware costs specifically attributable to the class.
- Student travel for class trips.
- Pass-through fees for malpractice insurance, and costs of certifying students or assessment if required by accrediting agencies.
Class fees do not pay for instruction, except in ENGL 90, individual music lessons, and activities classes such as dance. Class fees do not pay for permanent physical facilities, supplies and services not directly associated with the class, or library materials.
Proposals to charge class fees undergo careful scrutiny and are ultimately decided by the Provost, based primarily on a judgment of whether the benefits to students merit the cost. The university's procedures and guidelines for such proposals can be found at the Online Forms on the ISU Finance and Administration web site.
For more information about how a particular class fee is used, please consult the department offering the class or visit its web site.
