Meet the New Dean

Turley-Ames has served the last year as ISU associate vice president for academic affairs. She served as chair of the Department of Psychology from 2003 to 2009, where she helped develop a clinical psychology Ph.D. program that is rated first in the nation out of 207 programs based on licensure exam scores. She has also served as interim assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and acting graduate dean.
In 2006-2007 Turley-Ames was named Distinguished Teacher at Idaho State University. She is a graduate of the Higher Education Resource Service (HERS) for women in higher education administration, and in 2007-2008 was a nominee for the US Professors of the Year Award. She earned her PhD in psychology with an emphasis in cognition and memory in 1996 from Washington State University.

- Ronald Hatzenbuehler, Associate Dean for Social and Behavioral Sciences
"I am very excited about these two accomplished professionals serving as key leaders in the formation of the new College of Arts and Letters," said Kandi Turley-Ames, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Letters. Randy Earles joined the ISU faculty in 1991. He served as Chair of the ISU Department of Music from 2001 until his new appointment, and during the past year he also served as Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. Earles has won several awards for his compositions, and many of his creative projects have been published or recorded commercially.
His latest band composition, Idaho Celebration, was commissioned by the State Department of Education and will be performed by various Idaho high school bands. He has received an award annually from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) since 1997.
Earles has performed on trumpet with the Portneuf Brass, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Pops Orchestra, the Houston Ballet Orchestra, the Oklahoma City Community Orchestra, the Idaho State Civic Symphony, the Idaho Falls Symphony, the Magic Valley Symphony, the Snake River Chamber Orchestra, and he has toured the USA with show bands. He currently serves as principal trumpet with the Idaho Falls Symphony.
He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music from the University of Houston and his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma.

Ronald Hatzenbuehler has been a faculty member of the ISU Department of History since 1972 and was its Chair from 1974 to 1977. His awards and recognitions include Idaho State University Distinguished Teacher, 1994; ISU Master Teacher, 1981; and ISU Public Service Award finalist 1990. He was honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award in the Humanities by the Idaho Humanities Council in 2008.
He is widely published and his works include the book "I Tremble for My Country": Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia Gentry published in 2006 by The University Press of Florida. He was interviewed about this book on Book TV (C-SPAN2), which first aired in 2008. He also wrote the book, with Robert L. Ivie, Congress Declares War: Rhetoric, Leadership and Partisanship in the Early Republic, published by the Kent State University Press in 1983. His scholarly works include many additional papers and essays delivered at professional conferences and a variety of contributions and reviews for various publications. He has served on a wide variety of Idaho State University committees and councils, and has served on the ISU Faculty Senate.
