Re: Requests for positions

As I indicated at the August 15, 2002, chairs meeting, I would like some additional information to accompany requests to announce positions. For now, this information will only be required for requests to fill positions currently in departmental budgets. If new funds become available to add positions, I will inform you about the process to make such requests and the information required.

For tenure-track and other full time faculty positions supported by the general fund budget (excluding grant- and contract-funded positions), please provide the following information as a cover memo when you submit ISU AA Form 1-75 for approval.

  1. How does this position help meet the strategic needs of the department? In other words, why do we need to fill this position?
  2. What is the current profile of the department? That is, of the tenured, tenure-track, and other full-time faculty, what is the distribution by gender and by ethnic identification?
  3. What is the department’s general plan for recruiting a diverse pool of candidates? That is, what steps will be taken to assure that applications from candidates from under-represented groups will be available for review. A simple list of outlets for advertising is not sufficient.

For classified staff positions supported by the general fund budget, the Dean’s office requests approval from the academic vice president prior to contacting Human Resources for a list of eligible applicants from the classified staff register. Once this approval is in hand, departments may work directly with HR to select applicants for interviews. For me to make a convincing case to the Vice President, please provide me with a short statement explaining why it is necessary for the department to fill such a position.
