Artist Statement:
Growing up in India, the Middle East, and northern Africa with a Dutch father and Australian mother, in addition to the opportunity to travel all over the world, has given me a broad, multicultural perspective and nurtured a deep love for the study of culture, language, history, and religion.  These formative experiences ultimately influenced my decision to pursue advanced degrees and a teaching career in art history.

Drawn to the inherently international and interdisciplinary nature of art history, I now aim to emphasize these features in my teaching.  As part of a liberal arts education, art history courses should foreground the relationship between the visual arts and the humanities.  Art is clearly the main focus of art history, but rather than adopting a strictly formalist approach, my goal is to encourage students to develop their interests and skills in many areas by situating works of art in a broader context, studying them from many different perspectives and considering them in relation to a wide spectrum of historical, philosophical, religious, intellectual, political, literary and linguistic traditions.
