- The most commonly stated reason for poor academic performance is an unbalanced division between work and school commitments. If you need to work fulltime (35+ hours), do not take more than 6-8 credit hours at school.
- If you plan to go to school fulltime (12+ credits), do not work more than 20 hours per week.
- You can get Financial Aid for full time, 3/4 time and 1/2 time status.
- Remember to balance the styles of courses you choose each semester. Pair difficult and time-consuming courses with lighter ones.
- Even if you're undecided or want to change majors see an advisor each semester!
- Most likely it will take more than 4 years to complete your degree.
- It is not OK to just stop attending classes!
- A general rule-of-thumb is to plan on a minimum of 2-3 hours of homework for every one hour of class time.
- 12 credits = 12 hours in class a week + 24-36 hours of homework = 36-48 hours needed for school.
- Some weeks will require more time than others.
- Even if your instructor doesn't take roll, you should go to class every time it meets!!
- Just because you can stay up 'til dawn and sleep 'til dusk, don't!!
- Schedule study time like it is a required class. TAKE BREAKS!! Avoid marathon studying!
- Sit in the front of the class and be attentive to the teacher.
- Make sure you are aware of Satisfactory Progress Requirements so you are not dismissed or denied Financial Aid Assistance.
- Pick a few extracurricular activities and get involved!
- Talk to your teachers, make sure they know who you are!
- Study alone - then study with other students!
- Take control of your time and learn to say "NO" when necessary!
- Get a daily planner, carry it, and use it! Write down due dates for assignments and daily and weekly goals.
