Students Taking Academic Responsibility (STAR) Online Probation Workshop
What is Probation? What do I need to know about ISU policies?
Probation is a university designation that is used to inform the student that his or her grade point average indicates that adequate progress is not being made toward graduation requirements. At ISU, we have two probation levels.
- Freshmen (less than 26 credits attempted) must maintain a 1.75 ISU cumulative grade point average (GPA) to be in good academic standing.
- Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors (26 credits or more attempted credits) must maintain a 2.00 ISU cumulative GPA to be in good academic standing.
If a student falls below the minimum levels noted above, that student is placed on probation. Each semester that the student’s ISU cumulative GPA is below the minimum level, that student must earn at least a 2.00 semester GPA or he or she will be dismissed.
Take note:
Earn a C average for each semester that you are on probation. Be very cautious and deliberate when choosing your courses. Seek help from an advisor.
When you are on probation, you MUST earn a SEMESTER GPA of 2.00 (a C average) in your classes for that semester (or, raise your CUMULATIVE GPA to the appropriate level (1.75 for freshmen, 2.00 for sophomores juniors, or seniors) or you will be dismissed from the university.
Students are responsible for knowing if they have been placed on probation. Check your grades immediately at the end of the semester to determine if you are in good standing or if you have been dismissed.
If dismissed, a student is required to layout (not take classes) for a specified period of time. Summer session does not count as a semester of layout.
- For the first dismissal, a student must layout one semester.
- For the second dismissal, a student must layout two semesters.
- For a third and any subsequent dismissals, a student must layout two semesters and petition the Readmission Review Board for readmission.
Take note:
Summer session might be a good time to raise your GPA if you have been dismissed, but you cannot use Financial Aid to pay for it.
Summer Session Grace Period for Dismissed Students
A student may attend summer session for the purpose of raising the GPA, but as a dismissed student, he or she is not eligible to receive Federal Financial Aid. If a dismissed student attends summer and raises the ISU cumulative GPA up to the minimum levels, the student will be in good standing and allowed to attend in subsequent semesters. If the dismissed student attends summer and does not raise the ISU cumulative GPA up to the minimum levels, the student will be placed on “continued dismissal” and must complete the layout requirement.
Take note:
Summer session might be a good time to raise your GPA if you are on probation.
If you are on probation and attend summer session, but do not earn a 2.00 summer session GPA, you will not be dismissed but will be placed on “continued probation” for the next semester of attendance.
Petitioning the Layout Period
Take note:
If you were dismissed but have extenuating circumstances, you may appeal your layout period to the Readmission Review Board.
The Readmission Review Board is made up of advisors and administrators who will review your documentation to determine if you are eligible to have the layout period waived. You may pick up the forms in Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Boise, or Twin Falls.
